It is used to check data integrity. It is an extra digit added to numerical data (if it remains the same after transmission then the data is considered uncorrupted). It is used with input, transmission, storage and processing.

A connection point for devices on a single network, it distributes communication to the devices on the network. However, it only sends the data to the destination device, not to all devices on the network. It is able to identify which network device is connected to which port.

Joins networks together - for example the internet and your home LAN. It enables data from one network to pass to another network, and importantly for that data to be understood.
