The castle

Last weekend, Richard and his parents decided to visit a famous castle. They wanted to spend the day there, so Richard's dad prepared a picnic and Richard's mum put some umbrellas, a camera and all the other things they needed in their rucksacks. Then they went to the station to catch the train.

The castle was enormous. 'I think this castle's very popular,' said Richard. 'How do you know?' asked Mum. Well, there are so many cars here,' answered Richard.

Dad bought three tickets. A woman was waiting at the entrance to take them on a tour of the castle. 'There has been a castle here for more than six centuries,' the woman told them. They learned about the famous people who once lived in the castle and about the secret room there. Richard was really interested in that.

'Has anyone ever found the room?' asked Richard.

'Not yet,' laughed the woman.

After that, they went outside to sit on the grass and have their picnic. But then it started to rain. 'Oh no!' said Mum.

'It's OK, Mum. We can eat later. Let's go into the castle again and find the secret room. Come on - it'll be exciting!' said Richard.

'OK,' laughed Mum. 'We can eat our picnic in the secret room!'

Emma was bored. It was Saturday afternoon and all her friends were busy. Then her mum showed her the newspaper. 'Look!' she said. There was some information about an art competition. The post office wanted children to design a new stamp. 'It says you should send them your best picture of an insect,' said Mum.

Emma decided to enter the competition. 'I'll do a picture of a butterfly,' she said. She used lots of different colours and some special silver paint in her picture. She felt pleased with it. When she finished, Mum gave her a huge brown envelope. Emma put the picture inside. 'I'll send it tomorrow,' said Mum.

During the next week, Emma had lots of things to do, and she forgot about the competition. Then one day, when she came home from school, Mum said, 'There's a letter for you? Emma didn't often get letters. She sat down, opened the envelope and read the letter. Then she jumped up and shouted I've won the competition!' She was very excited.

A few days later, a journalist came to Emma's house. She asked Emma some questions about her picture. There was a photographer with the journalist. He took some photos of Emma and her design.

Emma's prize for winning the competition was some beautiful pencils, and she thinks it is amazing to see her stamp on everyone's letters.
