Figurative Language in The Absolutely True Diary Chapters 1-2

From Page 3, Chapter 1:

I get headaches because my eyes are

What is the author's point?

• No particular point. He's just being funny.

• His eyes used to get along with each other, and now they don't.

• His eyes no longer work properly together.

From Chapter 1, Page 6:

I think the world is a series of broken dams and floods, and my cartoons are tiny little lifeboats.

What does this mean?

• The world is full of water and lifeboats are sometimes needed.

• Life is difficult. Drawing helps him feel better.

• The world needs more lifeboats because there is flooding when dams fail.

From Chapter 2, Page 11:

My mother and father are the twin suns around which I orbit and my world would EXPLODE without them.

What does this mean?

• Junior's parents are the most important people in his world.

• Junior and his parents are all very large, like planets.

• The planets care about each other like parents and their children.

From Chapter 2, Page 13:

My mom can recite whole pages by memory. She's a human tape recorder.

What does this mean?

• Instead of memory, Junior's mom has a tape recorder.

• Everyone's memory is like a tape recorder. It records information exactly.

• His mom's memory is so good that it's an exact copy like you would get on a tape recorder.
