Sources of Inspiration for Hair and Hair Design

What or whom are your sources of inspiration when it comes to hair and/or hair design?

List the designers who motivate you.

Do you favor hair designs that are conservative, retro, or trendy with a little edginess?

Choose a friend, relative, coworker, classmate, or someone else you know. Design a plan for a hairstyle that works well for the person's face shape and body type. Explain your plan and the details in the space provided. Then, create a collage of your vision on a separate piece of paper. Share your ideas and your collage with the class.

Explain how each element relates to hairstyling. For the element 'Line', describe how it creates the form/shape, design, and movement of a hairstyle.

For the element 'Form', explain what it represents in hairstyling and how it should relate to the physical features of a person.

Discuss the role of 'Space' in hair design, including the types of hair combinations it may involve.

Describe 'Design Texture' and how it contributes to the uniqueness of hair designs.

Explain how 'Haircolor' can be utilized in hair design to enhance the overall appearance.

Cut around the perimeter of the hairstyle for each angle and outline the style in the area provided below. Discuss with fellow students how different the silhouette is from various angles. Is the hair form in proportion to the shape of the head and face, the length and width of the neck, and the shoulder line? If a digital camera or camera phone is not available, consider creating a silhouette on the board in the classroom by adjusting the overhead lighting and using a flashlight or spotlight to create a shadow on the board. Once you have traced three different silhouettes of the hairstyle on the board, copy a smaller version in the space provided.
