the first public theological and moral arguments in European history over the rights and treatment of indigenous people by European colonizers. Bartolome de las Casas argued that despite their custom of human sacrifice, Native people were human and deserved to be treated as such. Juan de Sepulveda argued that the human sacrifice of innocents, cannibalism and other such "crimes against nature" were unacceptable and should be suppressed by any means possible, including war

An English sailor hired by the Dutch government in 1609 to find the Northwest passage to Asia. He failed to find a Northwest Passage but did find a large river in the northern part of North America that was named after him. His expedition established Dutch claims to what would become New Amersterdam and later New York.
