Navigating Incidences in Sessions

A STUDENT HAS LEFT IN THE MIDDLE OF SESSION, WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?​

• mark them present since they signed in​

• mark them as T for tardy on the roster

• mark them as absent & let them know leaving without notice can be counted as an absence​

• mark them as E for excused on the roster​

STUDENTS CONTINUE TALKING LOUDLY ABOUT A MOVIE & YOU HAVE ALREADY ASKED THEM TO GET BACK ON TASK MULTIPLE TIMES, WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?​

• redistribute the group​

• let them know that if they continue to be off-task, you will mark them as absent​

• contact a mentor​

• any of the above​

STUDENTS KEEP ARGUING ABOUT AN ANSWER CHOICE IN THE WORKSHEET

• make a new side for the argument

• choose a side of the argument and continue to instigate

• escalate the argument, so the whole class can choose a side.

• de-escalate the situation, and that an explanation for the question will be given soon

WHAT COULD YOU DO WHEN YOU HAVE A SHY STUDENT?

• Get after them for not answering

• Call them out in front of class for not speaking as much as their peers

• Rearrange the groups

• Implements new activities to try to make session more engaging

WHAT WOULD BE A VALID EXCUSE FOR NOT ATTENDING SESSION?

• "I'm tried, and don't want to be here"

• "I have work in 30 minutes, can I leave early?"

• "I've attached a screenshot of the professor approving my excuse for the session"

• "I'm so hungry and need to go out to buy some lunch"

STUDENT ARRIVED 30 MINTUES LATE TO SESSION, WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

• Nothing, at least they showed up

• Remind them of PLTL guidelines and mark them as absent

• Tell them that if they turn in the worksheet they will count as present

• Ask them in front of the class as to why they are late

STUDENT WALK OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF SESSION, WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

• Ask the students if they know why they left the session

• Follow them out and ask them why they are leaving

• Nothing, what can you do

• Remind session that in order to count as present they must stay until they are dismissed; and email student the same thing and PLTL guidelines/expectations
