Herd immunity is a community's protection against infectious diseases, achieved when a large portion of the population is vaccinated. Vaccines train the immune system to fight diseases it hasn't encountered. The MMR vaccine, for example, provides immunity against measles, mumps, and rubella. During outbreaks, vaccinated individuals remain healthy and do not spread the disease. Herd immunity is crucial for protecting those who cannot be vaccinated, such as the very young, the elderly, or those with weak immune systems. If vaccination rates drop, herd immunity weakens, allowing diseases to spread more easily.
