Between 1949 and 1954, Muzafer Sherif and Carolyn Sherif conducted experiments to test realistic conflict theory, which posits that intergroup conflict arises from competition for limited resources. The Robbers Cave experiment involved 22 boys who were divided into two groups, the Eagles and the Rattlers. Initially, the groups bonded separately, but competition led to conflict. The researchers then introduced cooperative tasks to reduce friction, demonstrating that working towards common goals can mitigate prejudice and discrimination.
