In the early 400s, the Roman Empire withdrew from Britain, leaving the Romano-British to form a new identity. Germanic tribes, including the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes, migrated to Britain, displacing the Romano-British and forming the Heptarchy by the 600s. The main states were Northumbria, Mercia, and Wessex. Viking invasions weakened Northumbria and Mercia, but Alfred the Great of Wessex repelled them, leading to the unification of England under Edward the Elder and Athelstan.
