The Legend of Tangkuban Perahu
Long ago in West Java, there lived a beautiful princess named Dayang Sumbi. She had a son named Sangkuriang. One day, Sangkuriang accidentally killed his pet dog, Tumang, not knowing that the dog was actually his father. When Dayang Sumbi discovered what had happened, she became furious and sent her son away.
Years passed, and Sangkuriang grew into a strong young man. He returned home and fell in love with Dayang Sumbi, not realizing she was his mother. Dayang Sumbi recognized him and tried to stop the marriage. She gave him an impossible task — to build a large boat and a lake overnight.
With the help of supernatural powers, Sangkuriang nearly completed the task. However, Dayang Sumbi tricked him by making the morning come early. Furious at his failure, Sangkuriang kicked the unfinished boat, which turned upside down and became Mount Tangkuban Perahu, a volcano that resembles an overturned boat.
Who was Dayang Sumbi?
