There were a few major events that led to the start of World War II. First, Adolf Hitler became the Chancellor of Germany in 1933. His Nazi Party, or the Third Reich took power and Hitler was essentially the dictator of Germany. In October of 1936, Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy formed the Rome-Berlin Axis treaty. In November of 1936, Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan signed the Anti-Comintern Pact. This was a pact against communism and Russia. Next, on July 7, 1937 Japan invaded China. Then Hitler annexed the country of Austria into Germany, called the Anschluss.

There were many events that caused World War II to begin. Germany invaded Poland, starting World War II. Since Poland and France and Great Britain were allies, they declared war on Germany. This led to Germany taking over and controlling Denmark and Norway. Due to Germany using quick strikes called blitzkrieg, meaning lightning war, they were able to take over much of western Europe including the Netherlands, Belgium, and northern France.

There were two sides during World War II: the Axis and Allied Powers. The Axis Powers consisted mainly of Germany, Japan, and Italy. On the other hand, the Allied Powers were made up mainly of Britain, United States, the Soviet Union, and France. The major leaders of the Allied Powers were Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin. In contrast, the major leaders of the Axis Powers were Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Emperor Hirohito. Both sides had goals, but they were different. The Axis Powers had hope of geographic domination, while the Allied Powers wanted to stop the Axis Powers.

Adolf Hitler presented a real problem to the world when he sought domination of Europe and a "perfect race." To defeat Hitler, the Allied Powers had to work together to stop him. Hitler's actions led to his own downfall because he was stubborn and refused to back down in many situations. Consequently, the Allied Powers were eventually able to take the countries he had annexed back and Hitler and the Nazis were defeated.
