To imagine what a cell membrane does, think of it like a plastic bag with lots of tiny holes. This cell membrane keeps unwanted items out of the cell but keeps all of the organelles in. It is like a gatekeeper that regulates movement in and out of the cell. It keeps a steady balance of water, nutrients, ions, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other molecules inside of the cell. The cell membrane is not solid but is made of millions of smaller molecules that make it porous and flexible. Much of the structure is made of proteins which help move molecules in and out of the cell.
