What are "Trials"?

• The hero is faced with challenges, some external, some internal, while opposing the antagonist.

• The setting of the story changes as the hero fully enters the magical realm or a world that is the exact opposite of their normal life.

• The climax of the story. The hero is successful (or not) at defeating the antagonist.

• Everything may be mundane, calm, or boring for the hero.

What is the "Return Home"?

• The hero returns. Sometimes this change is for the better and he/she lives happily ever after, but often the hero is damaged or so changed by what they endured that they cannot fit back into their old life.

• The hero may reject the call due to fear or doubt.

• The setting of the story changes as the hero fully enters the magical realm or a world that is the exact opposite of their normal life.

• When the hero meets his/her allies.

The Mentor

Character (or characters) who accompanies and helps the hero on his journey. Can provide comedic relief. Does not have to be human.

• The antagonist who represents our darkest desire and creates conflict for the hero. Often a villain

• Teacher, counselor, trainer, and encourager to the hero, who usually gives the hero a magical gift (talisman) This can be a fatherly/motherly figure, animal, object, or just an ordinary person who has a great impact on the hero.

• Someone or something presents the hero with a problem, challenge, or an adventure. This can be an event or a person.

• The protagonist of the story.
