What is damp runway?

• damp but not shiny

• soaked and shiny

A damp runway is where:

• pools of standing water is less than 25% of the runway

• the surface is not dry, but moisture on the surface does not give it a shiny appearance

• pools of standing water is less than 50% of the runway

• moisture on the surface of the runway gives it a shiny appearance

What is wet runway?

• soaked and shiny

• damp but not shiny

Definition of a wet runway:

• A runway that is neither dry nor contaminated

• Less than 3mm of water, a reflective surface and no standing water

• Less than 25% of the runway surface is covered with water, or where there is sufficient moisture on the runway surface to cause it to appear reflective, but without significant areas of standing water

• Less than 30% of the runway surface is covered with water, or where there is sufficient moisture on the runway surface to cause it to appear reflective, but without significant areas of standing water

What is the definition of a wet runway?

• Surface shows a change of colour due to moisture

• Surface is soaked but there is no standing water

• Patches of standing water are visible

• Extensive standing water is visible

What is slush?

• if compacted by hand, will stick together and tend to form a snowball (wet snow)

• can be blown if loose or if compacted by hand, will fall apart again upon release (dry snow)

• water saturated, splatters when displaced

What is reverted rubber hydroplaning?

• Due to heavy braking, ………. lead to locked wheel skid

• Braking during backward movement of the aircraft

Landing on a runway with more than 3mm of standing water:

• The spin up speed shows the onset of hydroplaning

• Hydroplaning will occur when speed reaches 9 sqrt tyre pressure

• The spin down speed shows the onset of hydroplaning

• The spin up speed indicates the recovery from hydroplaning
