Reading: Paired Texts: King Tut’s Tomb

Entering King Tut’s Tomb

When Howard Carter, an English archaeologist, arrived in Egypt, he set out to find an undiscovered tomb which belonged to King Tutankhamen (King Tut), who lived around 1400 B.C. and died as a teenager. Carter searched for many years without success but finally in Thebes, Egypt

on November 1922, Carter’s team found steps hidden in the debris which led to a sealed doorway labeled Tutankhamen. On February 16, 1923, Carter entered the sealed burial chamber of King Tut. They were thrilled to find it almost completely intact, with untouched treasures after more than 3,000 years. Once Carter explored most of the tomb, he entered the last chamber and found a sarcophagus with three coffins nested inside one another. The last coffin was made of solid gold and contained the mummified body of King Tut.

First Hand Account by Howard Carter, Source: Hoving, Thomas, Tutankhamun -The Untold Story (1978)

Slowly… the remains of passage debris…were removed, until at last we had the whole door clear before us… I inserted the candle and peered in… At first I could see nothing… but presently, as my eyes grew accustomed to the light, details of the room within emerged slowly from the mist, strange animals, statues, and gold -everywhere the glint of gold… We were at the entrance of the actual burial-chamber of the king, and that which barred our way was the side of an immense gilt shrine… Around the shrine… at the north end, the seven magic oars the king would need to ferry himself across the waters of the underworld.

Write a paragraph to compare and contrast the information from both texts. Make sure to compare first then contrast.
