Answer explanation

This was one of the most missed questions across all of fifth grade, so pay close attention! The correct answer is A.

When multiplying mixed numbers we have TWO options for solving.

Option 1: Convert to improper fractions (5 3/4 = 23/4 and 3 1/2 = 7/2 = 14/4), then multiply the fractions 23/4 x 14/4 = 322/16. Simplify, we get 20 2/16.

Option 2: Distributive method.

(5 x 3) + (5 x 1/2) + (3/4 x 3) + (3/4 x 1/2)

(15) + (2 1/2) + (2 1/4) + (3/8)

Either way is complicated, but it appears almost everyone solved by ONLY multiplying the whole numbers together and ONLY multiplying the fractions together. That's missing some big chunks of the floor space!
