About this resource
This quiz focuses on the fundamental Earth science concepts of weathering, erosion, and deposition, which are essential components of 5th grade geology curriculum. Students must demonstrate their understanding of these three interconnected processes that shape Earth's surface over time. The questions require students to differentiate between weathering (the breaking down of rocks into smaller pieces), erosion (the transportation of sediment and rock materials), and deposition (the settling of materials in new locations). Students need to recognize real-world examples of each process, understand the agents that cause these changes such as water, wind, gravity, and temperature, and distinguish between chemical and mechanical weathering. The quiz also challenges students to evaluate true and false statements about the time scales involved in these processes and the relationships between different geological forces. Created by Amy Pegram, a Science teacher in US who teaches grade 5. This quiz serves as an excellent formative assessment tool to gauge student comprehension of Earth's changing surface processes before moving on to more complex geological concepts. Teachers can use this as a warm-up activity to activate prior knowledge, assign it as homework to reinforce classroom learning, or implement it as a review session before summative assessments. The color-by-numbers format makes it particularly engaging for 5th grade students while maintaining academic rigor. This assessment aligns with NGSS 5-ESS1-2, which requires students to develop a model using an example to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere interact, and supports the disciplinary core idea that nearly all of Earth's available water is in the ocean and most fresh water is in ice caps and glaciers with only a small fraction available in surface water and groundwater.
