Ugh!!  I am a cell and I have all this garbage inside!  It's too big to just go through the cell membrane.  I guess I will package the materials and get rid of the waste.

Uh oh, someone heated fish in the microwave.  At first, I couldn't smell it all the way across the room. But now, the molecules have spread out evenly throughout the room and EVERYONE smells it!!

I need energy!  I am going to eat a good lunch.  Then, the food molecules will get broken down and absorbed into the cells.  Then in the mitochondria, the glucose (food) meets with oxygen and this process happens!

Yesterday we ran the mile and did sit-ups!  I was breathing really hard.  Today, my stomach and leg muscles hurt (because of a waste product called lactic acid)!  Because I didn't get enough oxygen, my body switched to this process to produce energy.

The sprinkler system in my yard broke and all of the plants started to wilt (fall over).  I guess their vacuoles are empty- no water!  No worries, as soon as I fix the system, the vacuoles will fill up with water because of this process!

The cell is in danger!!  It needs some special minerals to survive.  Unfortunately, the minerals are too big to just go through the cell membrane.  They will need energy and a special process to bring them INTO the cell!  Whatever shall they do???

Timothy Green was soooo lucky!  If he needed food, he could just stand outside and let the sunlight get absorbed into his cells.  Then the sunlight would mix with carbon dioxide and water to make the glucose he needed!!  Wow, I can't do this process because I am an animal, but plants do it!!

Ok, no more fun stories.  Here's a definition:
the movement of molecules across the cell membrane from LOW to HIGH concentration.  But wait there's more!!!!!  It needs energy to do this!!

That crazy cell membrane!  It has these weird spots called "special" proteins.  They are great places for large molecules to get in and out of the cell WITHOUT using the cell's energy.
