Expository Text Features

What is the purpose of subheadings?

• To help the reader understand the author’s opinion

When you are looking for a particular piece of information in expository text, what can help you FIRST?

• Rereading the entire selection

• Rereading the subheading for each section of text

Reading the title, subtitle, subheadings, photos and captions BEFORE reading expository text 

• only works for good readers

•  makes you waste time before reading the selection

• creates background information so you can better understand the text

• gives you all of the answers so you don't have to read the selection
