Charlotte Bronte was born on April 21, 1816 in West Yorkshire and was the third child (and there were six of them — Mary, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Patrick Brenwell, Emily and Ann) in the family of an Anglican clergyman Patrick Bronte (originally from Ireland) and his wife Maria.

In August 1824, Charlotte was sent by her father to the Cowan Bridge School for the daughters of the clergy. The Cowan Bridge School served as the prototype of the Lowood Boarding house in the novel Jane Eyre. The conditions at school were so terrible that Charlotte's two older sisters died, and her father took her home.
