Crayons have been used by people for many years. The idea to combine wax with color goes back thousands of years. The Egyptians used beeswax combined with color to paint on stones. They then used heat to melt the wax so it would stay in place. This method was used by many people around the world in the 17th and 18th centuries, in fact, it is still used today.
