People moved within the state, too, usually from the countryside to towns and cities. Texas was still more than 90-percent rural, but urban centers were growing. Galveston and San Antonio were the largest cities during this period.
However, some Texans left the state. Former Confederates who refused to take an oath of loyalty to the United States were part of that group. A few of these individuals moved to Brazil, where slavery was still legal. They founded settlements where their descendants still live today. Other former Confederates moved to Mexico.
