In 1961, a ceremonial parade at the Arakan barracks in Accra was attended by Prince Philip. Ghanaian chiefs were part of the colorful gathering that witnessed the retirement of the old colour. Prince Philip, in Field Marshal's uniform, presented the new Queen's colour to the 3rd Battalion, Ghana Regiment of Infantry, the first to be commanded by a Ghanaian. The battalion demonstrated excellent drill skills and took pride in their new colour, which was based on the national flag of independent Ghana.
