The teacher assigns a culminating task for a Social Studies unit. The success criteria for the task are provided to the students in advance and they use it to guide their progress.

It is day two and students are working on their Social Studies task.  The teacher walks around the room noting how the students are progressing to determine what mini-lesson she will teach tomorrow.

It is day three of students working on their Social Studies task. The teacher calls individual students to have them explain their progress.

It is the final work period and students must review the success criteria to ensure they have met all of the expectations of the assignment before submitting it the next day.

Students are ready to hand in their culminating task. The teacher provides the assessment tool to the students and asks them to self-assess their task and hand in the completed assessment tool with their assignment.

Students submit their work and teacher assesses it for a final mark for the unit.
