Fashion and Sewing Terminology

Gathers (shaping device)

• To pull fabric along a line of stitching so it puckers.

• To cut fabric into specific shapes.

• To sew two pieces of fabric together.

• To add decorative elements to fabric.

Fly-front (zipper)

• A popular zipper used on jeans, trousers, and skirts.

• A type of zipper used exclusively for jackets.

• A decorative zipper used in fashion shows.

• A zipper that is waterproof and used for outdoor gear.

Narrow rolled hem

• A feature of a high-end serger, folding technique for a rolled hem.

• A type of stitch used for quilting.

• A method for creating pleats in fabric.

• A technique for attaching zippers.

Tucks (shaping device)

• Parallel folds of fabric held by stitching from one end to the other.

• Single layer of fabric with no folds.

• A type of decorative trim added to the edge of fabric.

• A method of gathering fabric to create volume.

Lockstitch machine

• A sewing machine that uses only the top thread.

• A sewing machine stitch where the top thread interlocks with the bobbin thread.

• A type of machine that only embroiders designs.

• A machine that stitches fabric using a zigzag pattern.

Box (pleat)

• Fabric folded to create a wide, flat area at the top.

• A type of stitch used in sewing.

• A method of dyeing fabric.

• A technique for cutting fabric into shapes.

Topstitching

• A decorative stitch used only for embellishment.

• A stitch that is always hidden on the inside of a seam.

• A sometimes decorative, sometimes functional stitch usually 1/4" from the edge of a seam. Visible because it is done on the top of the item.

• A stitch used exclusively for hemming garments.

Pleats

• Fold of cloth made by doubling material and pressing or stitching it into place.

• A type of fabric that is lightweight and sheer.

• A decorative stitch used in embroidery.

• A method of weaving fabric to create patterns.

Front hip (pockets)

• A type of pocket located at the back of the garment.

• A variation of the in-seam pocket with the garment front shaped and faced by the front pocket hag.

• A pocket style that is only used in formal wear.

• A pocket that is exclusively for decorative purposes.

Set-in sleeves

• Sleeves sewn into an armhole.

• Sleeves that are attached with buttons.

• Sleeves that are cut in one piece with the bodice.

• Sleeves that are detachable for washing.
