As the French entered the Great Lakes region in 1660s, the Ojibwa people began trading with them. Then, the find more furs to trade with the French, the Ojibwa moved westward. During the 1700s and 1800s, they fought with the Dakota tribe over land. In the 1800s, the U.S. government sent the Ojibwa to reservations, areas of land set aside for certain Native American tribes. Many Ojibwa still live on these reservations today.
