Federal Reserve System (The Fed)

• Central banking system of the U.S. that controls the money supply and the interest rate for bank loans created in 1913.

• A private bank that issues currency without government oversight.

• A government agency that regulates stock market transactions.

• An international organization that manages global monetary policy.

Migration

• Movement of people within the same country, Harlem Renaissance when African Americans moved from the U.S. South to Northern U.S. cities.

• Movement of people from one country to another for better job opportunities.

• Movement of people due to natural disasters and climate change.

• Movement of people for educational purposes, such as studying abroad.

Immigration

• People moving into a new country

• Someone moving into the U.S., is an immigrant of the U.S.

• People leaving their home country

• A process of obtaining citizenship

Articles of Confederation

• A US government that was a strong central authority with a president and judicial branch.

• An alliance of the 13 states led by a Congress where states held more power than the national government.

• A system of government where the national government had complete control over the states.

• A form of government that was established after the Constitution was ratified.

Support

• To disagree with information as untrustworthy or incorrect.

• To agree with information as trustworthy or correct, using information to prove that a statement is correct.

• To provide an alternative viewpoint without evidence.

• To ignore the information presented.

Declaration of Independence

• Document outlining the reasons for American colonists' desire to remain part of the British Empire.

• Document in which American colonists explained to the world why they wanted to leave the British Empire. Based on Enlightenment ideas of inalienable rights, consent of the governed, and people’s right to change unjust government.

• A treaty signed between the American colonies and the British Empire to maintain peace.

• A manifesto declaring the superiority of British governance over the American colonies.

Eminent Domain

• Power of a government to take private property for public use, buying a farmer’s land to build a highway.

• A legal process for resolving disputes between private parties.

• A method for governments to regulate property taxes.

• A system for compensating landowners for lost income.

Civil Disobedience

• Refusal to obey the law, breaking a law on purpose because citizens believe the law is unfair or unjust (nonviolent protest).

• A legal method of protesting laws through petitions and voting.

• A form of protest that involves violent actions against the government.

• A strategy used by governments to enforce laws more strictly.

Rural

• Living in the city or urban area, usually a business professional for a living.

• Living in the countryside or country life, usually a farmer for a living.

• Living in a suburban area, often a mix of urban and rural lifestyles.

• Living in a remote area with little access to modern amenities.

Anti-Federalist Papers

• A series of essays written to support the Constitution.

• A series of essays written to oppose the Constitution.

• A collection of poems about federalism.

• A legal document outlining the powers of the federal government.
