Once upon a time, in West Kalimantan lived a widow with her daughter. The daughter, Jelita, was a beautiful girl. However, she was arrogant and lazy girl. She never helped her mother do the housework.
One day, jelita and her mother wanted to buy something in the market. The market was far from their shack, so they had to walk miles away. Jelita walked in front of her mother. With her a beautiful dress. Jelita’s mother, Darsah, walked behind her. In a dirty cloth. No one expected that the two people were mother and daughter.
All the way to the market, people were so impressed with Jelita’s beauty. However, they wondered who the old woman walking behing her was.
Then, one of them asked Jelita, “Hey, beuatiful girl, is that your mother walking behind you ?”
Jelita arrogantly said, “Of course not. She’s my maid”
They continued their walking. A young man met them and asked, “Hey sweetie, is that your mother walking behind you?”
“No. She’s really different from me. How could you say that she’s my mother? She’s my maid” replied Jelita.
Every time people asked, Jelita replied that the woman walking behind her was her maid. She never admitted she was her mother. Darsah was really dissapointed with Jelita. She couldn’t bear it anymore.
The poor mother finally prayed to God, “Oh, God. I can’t stand this. My daughter always humiliates me. I am so dissapointed with her. Please give her punishment.” With the power of God, suddenly Jelita’s body turned into a stone. Jelita cried and asked for a help, “Please forgive me, Mum…. Please help me”.
But it was too late. All of Jelita’s body had turned into a stone. Although all of her body had turned into a stone, people could see that the stone was crying. The people then called it “The Crying Stone”.
