Other People's English Accents Matter: Challenging Standard English Accent Hegemony

We live in a society where standard accents are highly valued. Generally, people who speak with a Standard English accent are seen through a positive lens linguistically; those whose English is accented are stigmatized. Thankfully, some people take a strong stance against it, claiming that accents are beautiful, reflecting a great linguistic diversity, from which every society can benefit.

One example is Akayla, a 48-year-old woman who was born in Mexico and immigrated to the United States with her family when she was a child. “Growing up in Chicago, I found accents to be fascinating. I enjoyed listening to people speak and tried guessing their country of origin, she said”. She acknowledges the beauty in diverse accents and express empathy about those who are subject to accent discrimination.

TEXTO 1: The Hare and The Tortoise

One day, a hare was making fun of the Tortoise one day for being so slow.

“Do you ever get anywhere?” he asked.

“Yes,” replied the Tortoise, “and I get there sooner than you think. I’ll run a race with you and prove it.”

The Hare, for the fun of the thing, agreed. The Hare was soon far out of sight, and laid down to take a nap until the Tortoise should catch up. The Tortoise meanwhile kept going slowly but steadily, and when the Hare woke up, the Tortoise was near the goal. The Hare ran his swiftest, but he could not overtake the Tortoise in time.

Moral: “The race is not always to the swift.”

Once upon a time there was a rose who was so proud of her beautiful looks. Her only disappoitment was she grew next to an ugly cactus. Every day, the rose would mock the Cactus on his looks while he stayed quiet.

One summer, the well in the garden became dry and there was no water for the plants. The rose began to wilt. She saw a sparrow dip her beak into the cactus for some water. Though ashamed, she asked the Cactus if she too could have some water. The kind cactus readily agreed and they both got through the summer as friends.
