Document Editing and Formatting Terms

Shift Keys

• Capitalize a letter when pressed at the same time with the letter.

• Lowercase a letter when pressed at the same time with the letter.

• Delete the previous character when pressed.

• Insert a space when pressed with the letter.

Delete

• Key used to remove text to the left of the insertion point.

• Key used to remove text to the right of the insertion point.

• Key used to copy text to the clipboard.

• Key used to paste text from the clipboard.

Hard Return

• Created by manually moving the cursor to the next line by pressing enter.

• A type of return that automatically adjusts the text to fit the page.

• A return that is created by using the tab key.

• A return that occurs when a document is saved and closed.

Capitalization

• Changes the characters to lowercase, uppercase, or title case.

• Changes the font style of the text.

• Increases the font size of the text.

• Adds a background color to the text.

Paint Format

• Tool which copies the text formatting applied to text and pastes it to a new selection of text.

• A feature that allows users to change the color of the text.

• A tool used for resizing images in a document.

• A function that automatically saves documents at regular intervals.

Soft Column Break

• Automatic start to a new column when the current column is full.

• A manual insertion of a column break by the user.

• A feature that allows text to flow continuously without breaks.

• A type of formatting that applies to images only.

Hanging Indent

• Indents all lines from the left margin except the first line.

• Indents only the first line from the left margin.

• Indents all lines from the right margin.

• Indents the entire paragraph from the left margin.

Word Processing

• Act of using a computer and software program to create, edit, and produce a text document.

• A method of printing documents on paper.

• The process of manually writing documents by hand.

• A technique for organizing files in a computer system.

Headers

• Text or graphics printed at the top of each page in a document.

• A type of footer used in documents.

• A section that summarizes the content of a document.

• A list of references at the end of a document.

Printing

• Process of sending a document to a printer to produce a paper copy of the document.

• A method of creating digital copies of documents.

• The act of writing text on a computer screen.

• A technique for scanning physical documents into digital format.
