Money doesn’t grow on trees — but illegal logging is booming.
Every year, forests as large as the entire country of Panama disappear. Some of this loss comes from small farmers clearing land for crops or animals, but the biggest cause is illegal logging. Around the world, people sneak into national parks at night and use fake forestry plans to cut down trees in protected areas. Others secretly grow banned species of trees just to harvest them later.

According to the World Bank, illegal logging costs governments nearly $15 billion in lost income each year. It also causes serious harm: it destroys animal habitats, threatens biodiversity, and contributes to climate change by reducing the number of trees that absorb greenhouse gases.

However, new technology is offering hope. The Rainforest Connection project uses smartphones powered by solar panels and hidden high in tree canopies. These phones can detect the sound of chainsaws from miles away and instantly alert forest officials. Within just two weeks of launching, the project helped authorities catch illegal loggers. Some programs even recycle old phones for this purpose.

Consumers can help too—by choosing wood products with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) label, which ensures they come from responsibly managed forests.
