Listen to the following story. How is traffic in a remote part of New Mexico related to the tilt of Earth’s axis? The answer is a perfect example of how cycles are related. Earth’s axis is not aligned precisely with the sun. We are tilted about 23.5 degrees from the vertical axis with respect to our plane of rotation around the sun. This tilt is the result of a minor collision we had with another body in space during the formation of our planet. The tilt of Earth’s axis is the cause for the seasons. It means that different amounts of sunlight reach different parts of Earth during different times of the year. When it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere, the North Pole is pointed more directly at the sun. When it is winter in the Northern Hemisphere, the South Pole is pointed more directly at the sun. The result is that the seasons are opposite one another in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The changing of seasons affects the life cycles of many plants and animals. Some of the most dramatic effects are in the behavior of birds. Many Northern Hemisphere birds migrate north in the summer and south in the winter. Among these birds are sandhill and whooping cranes. The numbers of sandhill cranes are many. Their migrations fill the sky with flocks of birds whose sound while flying and on the ground can be heard for miles. Whooping cranes are endangered. Their numbers are few. For birders, seeing one of them is a lifetime achievement. The most dramatic migration of the cranes occurs in the fall. They travel from Canada and the northern part of the United States to places like Florida, Texas, and New Mexico. The birds spend the winter near bodies of water with good food supplies. In New Mexico, the cranes usually winter along the Rio Grande River. One spot is very dear to them, a location that is an hour and a half south of Albuquerque. It is called Bosque del Apache. This area has been designated as a national wildlife refuge. Thousands and thousands of cranes and other birds start arriving at the Bosque in October. The area itself is beautiful. It’s a mix of trees along the Rio Grande, mountains in the background, and high desert in between. It is no surprise that thousands of people come to the area to enjoy the scenery and the birds. On a typical fall weekend, cars will be bumper to bumper as they make their way in and out of the refuge and around the roads that wander through it. The traffic moves very slowly, but no one really cares. Their windows are down so they can see and hear the birds that are everywhere. If there is a place to park beside the road, it is soon filled with cars. The people get out and walk along the trails that snake through the area. In some places, boardwalks have been constructed to allow visitors to get even closer to the birds. Unless you have visited the Bosque, it is difficult to imagine the experience. It is truly one of the most beautiful blends of sight and sound anywhere. The huge cranes are constantly taking off, landing, standing, or feeding. The whole time, they are making sounds that are almost symphonic melodies. Beyond the cranes and geese, there are thousands of other birds, from majestic eagles to tiny bushtits that live in the area. A Festival of the Cranes takes place every year near the Bosque. It includes art exhibits, nature walks, learning experiences, and a variety of other activities. And just think, all of this is the result of the cycle caused by the tilt of Earth’s axis.
