What should you do before you go to bed at night?

• Shut all of the doors in your home

• Open all of the windows in your home

• Say goodnight to the dog/cat/goldfish

You are in bed at night asleep when you suddenly awake to the sound of the smoke alarm going off. What should you do?

• Ignore it and go back to sleep, it’s probably a false alarm

• Go into every room to try and find the fire and put it out

• Get up and shout ‘Fire’ loudly to make sure everyone in the house knows there is a fire

Now that you are up what should you do?

• Open your bedroom door and get out.

• Test the door with the back of your hand for heat

• Hide in a cupboard or under the bed

If the door handle is cold what should you do?

• Phone the fire service

• Get outside as quickly as possible making as much noise as possible

• Hide in a cupboard

If there is lots of smoke what should you do?

• Hold your breath

• Run through it

• Keep low down and crawl along the floor

If the door handle is warm what should you do?

• Hide in a cupboard

• Open the door and try to run through

• Open a window and shout for help

What should you do once you are safely out of your home?

• Call 999 and ask for the Fire and Rescue Service from a mobile or a neighbour's house

• Wait on the Fire Service arriving as someone else has probably phoned

• Go to the shop for some juice

When you are safely out of your home, you must never....

• Knock on the neighbour's door and tell them there is a fire

• Stand well back from the home

• Go back inside.

Why is it important to make sure you do not have things lying all over your bedroom floor?

• So that it is easy to hoover

• So that nothing gets in your way or trips you up if you have to get out of your room quickly in an emergency.

• So that you know where everything is
