Why was 9 subtracted?

• Because a 9 was added to form a perfect square trinomial, so the equation would have been unbalanced without also subtracting 9 on the right side.

• Because, in order to complete the square, a -6 was cut in half to complete the square. Half of -6 is -3, and -6+(-3) = -9

• Subtracting a 9 is against my religion, so I'm going to select this answer option in protest for hurting my feelings.
