Tips to Use the Compass

You need your compass and a piece of scrap paper for this lesson. You should make sure your pencil has a sharp point.

Do you have a piece of scrap paper and your compass?

• Yes I do and I am ready to go!

• No I do not! But I will go get them now. Once I do I will choose the other answer, because this one is not the correct answer.

Does your compass point and pencil point line up with each other?

• Yes! I am ready to start drawing circles!

• No, but I will fix that and then choose the other answer, because that is the correct answer.

This is the BEST way to use the compass!  Keep the pencil slanted so that it drags along the paper.

Now, on your scrap paper draw at least three circles! Keep trying until you have 3 nice circles!

• I kept working with my compass until I got 3 good circles.

• I stopped even though I don't have three good circles yet! (This is the wrong answer... go back and keep working!)
