The Pacific region experiences more damaging earthquakes than any other area in the U.S. due to tectonic plate movements. Earth's crust is divided into tectonic plates that move over the mantle. The collision of these plates along the West Coast creates pressure, forming mountain ranges and volcanoes. Fault lines, like the San Andreas Fault, develop where plates meet. The Pacific plate and North American plate move at different rates, causing pressure that leads to earthquakes. These earthquakes, especially near the San Andreas Fault, result in significant property damage and loss of life.
