In the early 1820s, American settlers moved to Texas, then under Mexican control, to act as a buffer against hostile Indians. By the 1830s, tensions rose as Mexico restricted American immigration and abolished slavery. Texan revolutionaries, including both Anglos and Tejanos, sought independence. The Alamo became a pivotal battle where Texan defenders, including Davy Crockett, resisted Mexican forces. Despite their defeat, they delayed the Mexican army, allowing Texans to regroup. In April 1836, at San Jacinto, Texans led by Sam Houston defeated Santa Ana, leading to the establishment of the Republic of Texas.
