Thomas Jefferson, the third U.S. President and primary author of the Declaration of Independence, was born in Virginia in 1743. He received a rich education and began his political career in the Virginia House of Burgesses. Jefferson played a key role in the American independence movement, drafting the Declaration of Independence in 1776. He served as governor of Virginia, minister to France, Secretary of State, and Vice President before becoming President in 1800. His presidency saw the Louisiana Purchase and a victory against the Barbary pirates, but also the economic failure of the Embargo Act. Despite advocating for liberty, Jefferson owned slaves and had a relationship with Sally Hemings. After his presidency, he founded the University of Virginia and died on July 4, 1826.
