The Revolt of Felipe dos Santos, also known as the Vila Rica Revolt, occurred in 1720 following the discovery of gold in Minas Gerais. Portugal imposed a 20% tax on gold, leading to the creation of 'casas de fundição' to collect this tax. Miners in Vila Rica opposed this, but the revolt was suppressed by the governor's troops. Felipe dos Santos, a miner, was executed, and the tax system was enforced. This led to the separation of Minas Gerais from the São Paulo captaincy.
