Phagocytosis involves phagocytes being attracted to invasion sites by chemical signals. They attach to microorganisms using surface receptors, a process enhanced by opsonization. The microorganisms are engulfed into a phagosome, which fuses with lysosomes to form a phagolysosome where digestion occurs. Finally, the digested contents are expelled by exocytosis.
