The Great Leap Forward, initiated by Mao Zedong in 1958, aimed to rapidly transform China into an industrialized communist society through collectivization and industrialization. However, the plan led to a catastrophic famine, resulting in the deaths of 30 to 50 million people. The ambitious policies, including unrealistic production quotas and ineffective agricultural techniques, caused severe food shortages and economic collapse. Despite initial growth, the economy crashed by 1961. Mao's leadership faced criticism, leading to his temporary retreat from power, but he later returned with the Cultural Revolution.
