In May 1940, Germany invaded the Netherlands, Belgium, and France, quickly overpowering them. The Allies, unable to hold their positions, began planning Operation Dynamo to evacuate troops from Dunkirk. A German halt order unexpectedly allowed the Allies to evacuate 338,000 soldiers, including 120,000 French, using a fleet of 860 boats. Despite losses, the evacuation boosted British morale and preserved trained soldiers for future battles. Winston Churchill called it a 'miracle' in his famous speech.
