In May 1940, the German Luftwaffe attacked the Dunkirk pocket, where Allied forces were trapped. Admiral Bertram Ramsey initiated Operation Dynamo to evacuate British troops. Despite Belgium's surrender, which increased pressure on the Allies, the evacuation continued. The Luftwaffe targeted rescue ships, but over 300,000 troops were eventually evacuated, aided by small civilian boats known as the Little Ships of Dunkirk.
