Washington led the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War, becoming a national hero. He presided over the Constitutional Convention in 1787 and became the first U.S. president in 1789, setting many precedents. He retired in 1797, demonstrating that presidents aren't kings. Washington died in 1799, leaving behind a legacy of democracy and numerous places named after him.
