In the 1840s and 50s, a surge of Irish and German immigrants led to the rise of nativism in America. Nativists feared immigrants would take jobs, gain political power, and spread Catholicism, which conflicted with America's Protestant roots. This led to the formation of the Know-Nothing Party, which sought to restrict immigration and limit immigrant rights. Despite initial political success, the party failed to enact its agenda and dissolved, with many members joining the Republican Party. Anti-immigrant sentiments persisted as immigration continued.
