Hawaii's volcanic islands are formed over a hotspot in the Pacific Ocean, not at tectonic plate edges. A mantle plume heats rock, creating magma that rises to form lava. Hawaiian volcanoes produce basaltic lava, forming gently sloping volcanoes. The Pacific plate moves over the hotspot, creating new islands. The oldest islands are about five million years old, while the youngest, Hawaii, is still forming. Eventually, new islands will emerge as the hotspot moves.
