The Cold War was a period of political and military tension between the Western Bloc, led by the USA, and the Eastern Bloc, led by the USSR, from 1945 to 1991. It was characterized by ideological, political, and economic conflicts, including the policy of containment by the USA and the promotion of communism by the USSR. Key events included the Yalta and Potsdam Conferences, the Marshall Plan, the formation of NATO and the Warsaw Pact, the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Vietnam War. The Cold War ended with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe.
