Laura Bush, born in Midland, Texas, was an only child who grew up in a real estate family. A tragic car accident in 1963 made her more thoughtful. She earned a degree in education and met George W. Bush, whom she married. Her political life began when George ran for Congress. As First Lady of Texas and later the USA, she focused on education and literacy. Post-9/11, she addressed national anxieties and expanded her advocacy to health literacy and gender equality. Laura continues her work on these initiatives after leaving politics in 2009.
