Wall Street, now a financial hub, was originally a protective wall built in the 17th century by New Amsterdam settlers to guard against British colonists. Despite the wall, the British seized the colony in 1664, renaming it New York. St. Paul's Chapel, completed in 1766, is the oldest surviving building from that era. In the 1780s, American banks emerged, inspired by Philadelphia's banks, leading to the creation of the Bank of New York. The Buttonwood Association, formed by conservative financiers, evolved into the New York Stock Exchange, which moved to its current location in 1903.
