Benjamin Banneker, born in 1731 to freed slaves, was a self-taught mathematician and scientist. In the 1750s, he built a striking clock from wood, possibly the first in America. His skills in astronomy allowed him to predict solar and lunar events, and he contributed to the planning of Washington, D.C. Banneker also innovated in agriculture and published almanacs, one of which he sent to Thomas Jefferson, advocating for civil rights. He continued to fight against slavery until his death in 1806. Despite his house burning down on the day of his funeral, his legacy endures.
